Even as Lake Michigan has chilled to a still, and epic winds have seized his city of Chicago, rapper, J1S, nevertheless finds a way to make something warm, wavy and hypnotic. Supported by the likes of O.J. and Sonny Trill, he delivers “Rodeo”; a tranquilizing, first cut from the upcoming “Gipetto” project. Synonymous to its cover-art, “Rodeo” is an euphoric blend of colors and emotions. It is backdropped by a trippy, electric guitar; which glides ghostly about a world of bubbling synths, ambience, and grooving trap drums. A disembodied, electronic vocal gives further depth to the instrumental; washing you in waves of melody and elation. Before long, J1S’s rhymes are the only thing keeping your head above the water. With the trillest charisma and poise fathomable, a hook is served into the mix. One that sends the chilled-out energy of “Rodeo” swirling around you. Yes, J1S has bars; and the performance of O.J. and Sonny Trill on this record is to be equally respected. However, when it comes to creating a energy, emotion, and overall world, through sound alone, this Chicago artist’s talent is incomparable. “Rodeo” is a ride to die for. If it is any indication of what “Gipetto” has to offer, that project will make a tidal wave once dropped.

G Pea’s phenomenal, new opus “Glass House”, is opened with a poignant spoken word. Shrouded by a miscellaneous cacophony of noises, the rapper ushers us into the concept of his project. In a solemn, yet creative code, he speaks on the state of living in 21st century society; drawing countless parallels to “living in a glass house”. As moving as his soliloquy is, this ten-track album was seething for a sonic entrance to the glass abode; and G Pea provides one with the thunderous “Doors”. It is a magnetic trap banger, riddled with insightful jewels from G Pea’s own experiences and perspectives. Likewise, it cements the bases for much of the project’s sound. Tracks such as “WIFI”, the impactful single “Fishin”, “Progress”, and “Where You Going?” each adhere to this harmonious rubric; thumping club-ready beats coupled with inspiring, conscious bars.

Two personal favorites have to be the victorious, poetically-written 8th track “Foundation”; and the soulful, auto-tuned ballad of the 9th track “Devote”. Both show the splayed range of G Pea’s artistry, and add gorgeous architectural dimensions to the “Glass House” aforementioned. Truly, the masterpiece is a concept album, through and through; where the intellect of G Pea’s lyricism aims to refurnish the “Glass House” we’ve all been living in. By the end of the album, we discover that G Pea does not find this residence problematic what-so ever. The problem lies within the fact that, in the 21st century, we are all throwing stones. He hopes, with a listen to this incredible album that he can begin to remove those rocks from the palms of our hands.

For a melodic, moving joint dedicated to the ladies, on-the-verge rapper, D-Brown, has recruited the luminous vocals of Mannish Mania. In little under four-minutes, these two talented forces have combined and created the radio-ready hit, “Put A Ring On It”; and it is as infectious as a single can be. An arrangement of stark, piano chords forms an ideal bed for a bouncing trap kick, rattling hi-hats, snare, and smooth 808. Although, this is definitely a song the women can enjoy, the Gary rapper is merciless with his delivery and lyrics. A guttural, street-hardened voice shoots explicit bar after explicit bar about his significant other. Mannish Mania perfectly follows up these sentiments with a sensual hook. “I’mma put a ring on it.” he croons, under the roll of 808s, before adorning the record with his own erotic verse. Without question, “Put A Ring On It” is in mint position to win the radio and conquer the clubs. Toting a hit like this?; these two are in for an astronomical new year.

Impacting with superstar status is production-duo Illuminati Beatz’s latest single, “Life Is”. It features rap icons, Bun B, Gudda Gudda, and Project Pat; whom all fuse to create one dirty south bodyslam of a record. There’s so much Cadillac-worthy crank in the instrumental alone; which is divided into two halves. Side A follows Bun B, as he in his grimey, Texan drawl, provides the chorus for the record. An airy, tension-building synth plays within the foreground of the beat, lined by traditional, Southern 808 kicks, snares and claps. It’s a slow, easy listen that will lure you into a sense of tranquility; all for Gudda Gudda to bounce out of the cut and go in for the kill. This is where Side B comes into play, and it is a lot more dynamic than its predecessor. Although, he maintains the same, powerful drum loop, extra attention is paid to the melody of the beat. An intricate, yet devilish organ progression torments the buzz of a groovy, accompanying synth. This change in energy for the beat perfectly encapsulates Gudda’s own, whose New Orleans delivery comes stern and trill. Three Six Mafian, Project Pat, has it no differently on his verse, either. With the instrumental being identical to Gudda, Pat has no qualms giving us every bit of that dark, Memphis lyricism and flow we’ve all grown to love. “Life Is” is, without question, a powerhouse of a record that JByrd, The Sho, and the entire Dirty South should be proud of. With already 1.7 Million views to date on Youtube, it is only a matter of time before Billboard calls their name.
