 Demons. We all fight them. Young or old, black or white; no matter who we are, or where we come from, each one of us can relate to this skirmish with the dark side. Forces that push us to do wrong, despite our hearts knowing what’s right. Of all of us, Terock may be the utmost familiar with this plight; and his poignant new banger, “Demons”, distinctly attests. Certainly, the darkness that this Florida rapper has faced throughout life has been unspeakably staggering; however, it is no match for the sparkling tines of this track’s melody. A brightness shines through “Demons”’s instrumentation, complimented by the bounce of 808s, kicks and trap snares. Brilliantly, Terock uses this canvas to paint a picture of his own internal strifes. His voice runs in broad, passionate strokes across the mix; confessing bravely to depression and suicidal thoughts that have plagued him longer than we will ever know. Nevertheless, even in the face of these hardships, this outstanding Southern emcee knows exactly who holds his key to victory: God. In that sense, “Demons” is a four-minute, modern-trap prayer to the Most High. One that expresses his regret for inviting the Devil into his life; and remembrance of God’s power to save him. It is a banger that carries its weight in spiritual gold; especially when you absorb every word he’s spoke.

His latest mixtape is on the way, and in that vein, Jody Moet could not resist giving us a taste. That taste is “Hold Up”: a bubbly, yet torrid showcase of this Northwestern emcee’s lyrical and emotional capacity. Being one of the most recent drops from his projected full-length, LIONHEARTED, it should come as no surprise that this three-minute banger completely embodies the spirit of his mixtape’s title. Sidestep the tropical essence of “Hold Up”’s melodies and instrumentation, and you are left with growling 808’s, prancing percussions, and a roar of relative rhymes. For, within these well-rapped verses, Jody Moet bears the dint of his lion-esque soul. He has been betrayed and abandoned more times than he can count; yet, just as the trap drums continue to beat throughout the mix, so has his heart, throughout every turmoil he’s encountered. This determination to survive and overcome, that he reminds us of with every bar he delivers, is no different from the king of the jungle’s; proving that Joey Moet is the LIONHEARTED himself. “Hold Up” is a motivating anthem in that regard. A three-minute reminder that you too can overcome life’s catastrophes, no matter their capacities. In need of a banger whose message is just as great as its groove? Here to awaken our spirits with his almighty “Jesus Peace Love Fun” project, is Michigan’s own, Valiant Praize; anointed with versatility and the blessing of musicality. This ten-track effort is ripe with diverse sounds; ranging from the most cinematic, modern-trap, to choir-filled gospel rap, Pop, and tranquil R&B. This love only amalgamates as the project courses on, with tracks such as the bubbly “O Happy Day” giving a soulful-rap incarnation to his holy adoration. “Standing In Love” is an acoustic guitar ballad, filled with heart-touching, prayerful bars. The rest of the album is a musical expedition into pure, Christian rap; with Valiant Praize’s lyrics, melody and passionate inflections leading each hymn. “Jesus Peace Love Fun” is a masterful exercise in musical spirituality and unstoppable range. It is an energetic listen for young, Christian adults; and will bring the youth exponentially closer to Christ.

In a gorgeous collaboration of heavenly, puritan Hip-Hop, Virginia rapper, Kevin Calhoun, accompanied by the seraphic vocals of Breanna Martin, deliver unto us “For The World”. The record is a four minute thanks to God for blessing our DMV emcee with the basic essence of life. As he mentions through sharp, thought-provoking bars, Kevin Calhoun does not have the ideal life. Poverty, and myriad other tribulations have chipped away at the rapper, day in and day out. Yet, what he stresses over this soulful chord progression, and jogging Golden Era drums, is that the bare luxuries of life are enough to be grateful for. Family, music, and the simple ability to breathe, that we all take for granted, these are the elements that make the struggles of life tolerable. They complete him; and for that, Kevin would not change them “For The World”. This record is radiating with wisdom and maturity. A message I am certain this talented writer wants each and every listener to internalize and value. He delivers it flawlessly; and Breanna Martin’s silky, R&B hook is the ribbon on top. Thanksgiving may be over, but it’s never too late to rejoice in all the things you’re thankful for. Do so beautifully, with Kevin Calhoun’s “For The World”.

He is at the pinnacle of his penmanship on “Shoot Your Shot”, putting lyricism at the forefront of his masterpiece. Just as pure, Hip-Hop should be. This creative formula Kevin Calhoun has contrived is unbelievably bulletproof; and with “Shoot Your Shot”, this talented emcee proves ready to take the mainstream by storm.

“Timeless / Man, I swear this s**t timeless.” is uttered poignantly at the beginning of Texas emcee, D.Hewitt’s, 2018 cut “Timeless”. By the end of his three minutes and forty-seven seconds on the mic, he leaves us more than inclined to agree. There’s a triumphant, ambient pad that fulfills most of the melody, backed by a solemn bassline, trap drums, and Hewitt’s own candid lyricism. The atmosphere our Hillsboro hero manifests on the record is reflected perfectly throughout its visual, where Hewitt is featured in an all white room, accompanied by one lone microphone. Just as the day he walked into the studio and laid these verses, he proves in this music video that a microphone is all he needs to send a powerful message and create grandiose impact. “Timeless” is raw and honest in its lyricism, as well as delivery; wherein, the Lonestar rapper spits his personal journey and grown perspective on this thing we call life. It can likewise be viewed as an homage to all those he’s crossed paths with, as there is a moment near 1:10 where he name-drops a handful of individuals who’ve given him invaluable guidance. Hewitt embodies the pure essence of Texas on this track; coming across as the epitome of trill. He mentions his personal battles with suicide, betrayal, and betterance; refusing to distract any of us with metaphors of punchlines. He knows his message and life story are enough. Hewitt could not have titled this record any better. After it’s all said and done, and the Texan steps away emotionally from that lone microphone in the white room, he’s left us with something “Timeless” to honor.

Life is a movie; and South Floridian emcee, Konchynce, displays that perfectly in the latest music video for his powerful single, “My Life”. This concept is cleanly crafted by the opening of the video, wherein a slideshow of pictures, featuring the rapper, are aired on an animated, TV screen. Eventually, these images grow beyond the confines of that television, and by the start of his verse, they are fitting the full screen we see them on. Then the video, and the music it incarnates, become mutually reflective. That is because “My Life” is exactly that: a bar-filled recount of Konchynce’s journey thus far. 

Strengthened by an electronic, 808-heavy, hip-hop beat, the Florida native drops myriad rhymes regarding hatred from others, politics in the industry, and chasing his dreams, overall. He also mentions something he’s been “blessed with—“; and juxtaposed to that statement is an image of him holding a newborn child. This superbly represents the duality of his narrative. Although there are a vast amount of struggles in life we all have to cope with; there are moments in this same life that make them undeniably worth it. The track is glued together by a melodic chorus, in which Konchynce colorfully croons "Welcome to my life—", emphasized by the equally colorful haze of his video. All in all, Konchynce is a wise, passionate, and insightful emcee; and this welcome into his life, through an amazing song and visual, is an invitation you won’t regret accepting.
