The Houston, TX underground rap crew known as The Band of the Hawk Underground Pyramid (#BOHUP) comes through with their full-length LP titled Kangol, that was produced by Noah Archangel. Featuring 13 tracks, the guys of #BOHUP bring their A-game, delivering meaningful bars over dope lo-fi boom bap production. Highlights on the album include the light and airy, electric guitar-infused “Spirit Bomb” and the cool, calm and collective “Funny Bunny” that urges folks not to speak unless it’s about the money. The crew even takes it back to the days of skits in Hip-Hop with a witty one of their own titled “Phite Weoples.” Another track mentioning is the super smooth “Golden Child” where each member of the track gets a chance to tap into a more braggy flow that adds more dimension and versatility to the album. Along with Kangol on streaming services, #BOHUP also released exclusive CD's and limited vinyl that can be found on bandofthehawk.com. Bakersfield, CA rap trio Hoodlum Squad delivers their latest single “What U Talkin Bout” from their recently-released debut album, Season, via Dogsled Music.

The group is currently made up of three active members, including Tommy Brown a.k.a "Teflon Hoodlum,” Derrick Gage a.k.a “Field Boy P. Hoodlum" and Marcus Crompton a.k.a “Mack 11 Hoodlum."

On the smooth, laid-back track, each member showcases their lyrical versatility over production that’s infused with street-rap and trap-soul with elements of traditional R&B.

You can find “What U Talkin Bout” on the Squad’s latest album, Season, that features 11 exclusive tracks that embody a dope mix of old-school Hip-Hop and new-school street.

Just like that, it is here. After previously blessing us with their spectacular “Flux Capacitor” drop, Houston’s answer to The Wu-Tang Clan and early Pro Era, The Band of The Hawk, have finally released their “Kangol” project. Completely produced by original BOHUP member, Noah Archangel, and mostly upheld by Yeaux Majesty’s idiosyncratic rhymes, “Kangol” is this Texas collective’s 2019 endowment to the world of lo-fi, underground Hip-Hop. A world wherein they are slowly, but surely, becoming kings. The coronation occurs through a bevy of rap-heavy, boom-bap jams. Between sample-driven instrumentals, skits, and the lyrical ventures of featured BOHUP artists, Yeaux Majesty and Noah Archangel string together an impressively cohesive offering. Bangers, such as “Downtown Friday Nights”, “Bedrock”, “‘19 Mentality”, “Golden Child”, and “All U Need” flow seamlessly down this river of Golden Age musicality. If not for the apparent tracklist, “Kangol” could very much be presented as one, elongated piece of music; and that quality alone makes it superior to every other project released alongside it. In the space and history of lyrical, archaic, underground Hip-Hop, this project could very well become a classic. And The Band of The Hawk, the South’s answer to the legendary, old-school rap crews we hardly go a day without giving praise.

After wowing us all a while back with their Woah Vada release, “Ghosts In The Machine [Remix]”, Texas’s The Band of the Hawk have returned with another stellar contribution. Gearing up for the unleash of their April 20th album, “Kangol”, the Southern collective offer “Flux Capacitor”: three minutes of abstract, boom-bap bars. The Band’s Noah Archangel and Yeaux Majesty trade a slew of idiosyncratic rhymes over a sampled beat produced by Noah himself. Their flawless handling of the microphone gives “Flux Capacitor” a very East Coast, Golden Era sensation; bolting both artists outside the realm of conventional, Southern Hip-Hop. With such a sparkling, soul-stirring instrumental and broth of eccentric, narrative lyrics, one can not help but feel the influence of MF DOOM, and other ancient, underground legends. Only, The Band of the Hawk prove with “Flux Capacitor” that they have the ability to take their art beyond their predecessors. They are creative; unafraid to challenge the modern sphere of The Lonestar sound, and pave a lane uniquely their own. This fearlessness makes The Band of the Hawk a token we should be vying to protect; and “Kangol” a masterpiece we must anticipate.

Vibrant, piano strikes are the first things to shine through the mix of “Circle Too Small”. That is before the audacious flows of Heatray and Fargo introduce something even brighter to the track: their duo, 2 LIT. Amid the bounce of 808s, and syncopation of trap drums, this Washington, DC-Atlanta, Georgia team give stellar, sprightly performances; resulting in one of the most radio-ready records of the month. Everything about “Circle Too Small” perfectly coincides. The deathly lyricism of 2 LIT blends smoothly with the devious production of Trackdealer, whilst both elements uniquely match a ghostly, jet-black cover art. “My circle too small, gang members only / I walk around with the M and M’s on me!” Styles of the DMV and ATL both bite viciously through this hardbody single. Its subjects and atmosphere are teeming with the darkness of DC; while its rhythm, delivery and flow are something no true ATLien can ignore. Through fusing those two styles, 2 LIT has cultivated an invincible sound. One that will rocket them, and “Circle Too Small” straight to the club-rocking top.

Houston’s The Band of The Hawk is on an unstoppable roll. Last year, one of its members — Noah Archangel — released the instrumentally impeccable, “The Machine Wars: Levitikush”. Albeit, the project was seething with outstanding production, one of the most captivating beats was “Ghost In The Machine”. Today, for an in-house celebration of Valentines Day, another member of the clique — Woah Vada — is laying some romantic rhymes to that instrumental, thus offering “Ghost In The Machine (Remix)”. Vada brings a laid-back, Texan swagger to the electronic soundscape of the track. Throughout the entire three-minute and thirty second run-time, there is not a single moment wherein this Southern emcee is in conflict with the bubbly beat. His lyrics jog smoothly across the mix, seasoned by melodies and vibratos he casually slips into his inflection. It does not take a long listen to “Ghost In The Machine (Remix)” to realize that Woah Vada, as well as his The Band of The Hawk team, is onto something special. They are not chained to the typical, Texas sound; and that freedom has them pushing towards new, creative plateaus. Considering “Ghost In The Machine (Remix)”?; it is no argument that they are on the right track. A new wave is preparing to hit the Lonestar state; and The Band of The Hawk is at its helm.

New York will forever and always be the mecca of Hip-Hop. Whether rocking the radio with its take on trap music, or celebrating the Golden Era, boom-bap sound it birthed, The Empire State will always be at the forefront of rap. Likewise, its emcees will always be some of the best this country has to offer. Case in point: Enlightenment, a Buffalo trio devoted to resurrecting real rap. In dropping their 2019 effort, “TRAP: True, Real & Presence”, each one of them shines a lyrical light of their own. The clique is made up of Dom.P, Twin 2xs and the phenomenal femcee, T-Hood. Their chemistry is absolute when it comes to “True Real & Presence”. There is an abundance of speaker-thumping anthems running through this ten-track project— such as “Drug Deal” (feat. ElCamino), “Regular”, “Zoo” and “”JumpMan”. However, nothing hits harder than the boom-bap inflections riddling the project. T-Hood already stands out amongst her brethren as a powerful emcee; however, her performance, as well as her partners’ — on songs like “Straight Bars” launched her into another atmosphere. In forty minutes, Enlightenment go from being another trio of spitters, to the modern paragon of New York Hip-Hop artistry. They completely annihilated any beat that comes their way. With Buffalo picking up steam through Griselda Records, the door to stardom is ajar for this creative trio. “True, Real & Presence” is their first, herculean step through that vestibule. The musical range of genre-bending duo, Nilla Spice, certainly shines through on their newest smash, “Power Up”. Consisting of personas Cad Hollyhood and Tru Tyte, the record is inspired by both Hip-Hop and Electronic music. Unquestionably, there is a trap groove in the track; highlighted by its use of rolling hihats, dribbling kicks, and flavorful 808 claps. The Electronic element is derived from the power in their synths, which blossom irrefutably with color. At fifty seconds there is an awesomely synth-tinged breakdown, where the colors of EDM are vibrant. Soon, however, the energetic rapping of Nilla Spice commences, and you are reintroduced to his diverse flow. From rapid-fire spitting, to powerful chants of the hook, Nilla Spice showcases an undeniable talent for rapping. One that, combined with the track’s production, makes for a wide-reaching banger. 



Whatever crowd Nilla Splice preforms their new single, “Hate On”, for is in for an exhilarating night. They will be possessed by the voluminous rapping; and spurred to rage at their hearts’ content. That is a testament to the power that this Tampa Bay record wields; not only through its magnificent, vocal energy, but likewise its brain-throttling instrumental. To say the least, “Hate On” is musically sophisticated. It is an edgy mesh of various genres; all fusing together to create this radical, unchartered sound. The bounce is undeniably Hip-Hop; yet, the mess of synths buzzing in the foreground are distinctively native to electronic music. Around 25 seconds into the record, a funky, analog bassline slips into the mix, and the entire atmosphere is shifted. The duo allows the joint to breathe during this section, yet eventually, he crashes back into the track; as riotous and rebellious as before. Nilla is enveloped by powerful, wailing guitars during the chorus, where he chants melodiously “Hate On”. It is the model climax to the record; and if ever performed for that aforementioned crowd, will send each person into a craze. It is records like these which carve their own space into the realm of Hip-Hop; and solidify the careers of genre-bending artists. Nilla Splice and his recent banger, “Hate On”, are at the forefront of that promise.

Florida has been a hot bed for hip hop talent recently, led by Kodak Black and XXXTentacíon.  Since, we've seen a number of new artists emerge out of south Florida and may be looking at the next phenomenon.  KV Infinity, sliding onto the music scene out of Hallandale, Fla. is a six member group(LimboKV, LunaryKV, ManiiKV, NintiKV, VozziKV, and YoungkikeKV) looking to take the game by storm with their new single "Candy." The song has a nice jazzy groove, but still knocks coming through your speakers that will have your head bobbing uncontrollably. The track, which was produced by the groups own ManiiKV also has a catchy hook that you'll find yourself singing hours after the is over.  KV Infinity's unity and crew love for one another puts me in the mind of other mega groups like ASAP Mob and Odd Future.  "Candy" is the first single off of their upcoming mixtape, INFINITY and if it is any indication of what we can expect from  this squad, I'd imagine they will develop a cult core like the aforementioned groups in no time.
