The city of Philadelphia is breeding a powerhouse. An imprint of epic potential that could very well be the next leading label of ‘The Birthplace of America’. Known as Born Made Bosses Music Group (BMB), this East Coast collective is spearheading consciousness and the revival of boom-bap; utilizing their latest tape, ‘Soul & Spice Vol. 1’, as a swift introduction into their lasting magnificence. Sporting seven tracks, and seven tracks alone, the effort is fully produced by JSoul Musiq (BMB’s first artist and in-house producer). Over twenty minutes of runtime, our New Orleanian beat-maker splices sweet, soul samples with punching, Golden Era drums. These instrumentals lay the foundation of some of CG QUE’s (BMB’s head honcho), JSoul Musiq’s, and Super K’s most impassioned and thought-provoking verses; returning the essence of organic hip-hop to ‘The City of Brotherly Love’. Granted, a couple tracks feature modern percussions— with ‘Kryptic’ being a powerful, 808-driven rhyme-fest; and Atiya’s ‘What I Need’ braving shimmering R&B vocals over soft kicks and trap snares— they do not subtract from the project’s cohesive, old-school sound. Their equivalent use of soul samples is an adhesive that binds these records to the other joints on the project; keeping ‘Soul & Spice Vol. 1’ a smooth-flowing, nostalgic affair. Every artist spotlighted on this project uniquely holds their own; offering another dimension of brilliance to ‘Soul & Spice Vol. 1’ that hadn’t existed before their part. In twenty minutes, these artists combine and create something remarkable. Just imagine what they’ll be presenting us years down the line. If Philadelphia had no hope in R&B and the revival of Golden Era Hip-Hop, they certainly have one now; and Born Made Bosses is leading the way.

Most upcoming artists in Hip-Hop want nothing more than fame. The art takes a backseat to imagery, trends and social media stunts that will garner them a mainstream break. Few rising rap acts truly value the artistry and prospect of Hip-Hop; however, Swiss emcee, Rhyman, refuses to submit to that case. If anything, his new album, “The Wknd”, is a revival of lyricism and substance in a day where those elements seem to be dwindling away. The eleven track project sports of variety of Golden Era-styled beats, yet, this is not the sole factor that assigns “The Wknd” its Hip-Hop greatness. It is Rhyman’s proficiency as an emcee that makes this album an outlier of 2019. Whether you are cruising to the climatic opener, “Welcome 2 The Wknd”; awe-striking boom-bap cuts, such as “What If” and “Heaven”; the tranquil confessional of “No Sen$e”; or the abstract bangers, “Smog & Fire”, “Basick” and “Outro”; you will never hear Rhyman falter. He remains at the apex of his lyrical game for the duration of “The Wknd”. Does he reference wanting fame and a mainstream break as much as his fellow upcoming artists? Absolutely. However, the difference between him and them, is that Rhyman is willing to earn acclaim the only way you should in Hip-Hop: with creativity, honesty, and pure bars. He brings that triple package to “The Wknd”, and in doing so, has created an album that is true to the culture he breathes.

True to their Southern, slow-rollin’ heritage, Louisiana group, Undeniably Genuine, drop “Wood Grain Grippin’”. This Shreveport single rides right through the heart of quintessential, Southern Hip-Hop! UNG enlists a chosen feature from talented artist, Jaymee, who borrows the Chopped-n-Screwed flavor of Houston, Texas for its chorus; which manifests in a deep, double-cupped delivery. Crunk and Dangerous Production mixes a sinister slur into the funk-sampled electric guitar, creating a chalice of trill for dirty, 808 drums to fill. UNG’s verses are the jolly ranchers at the bottom. Although, each member is distinct with their flow, lyricism and storytelling; they maintain one, powerful commonality: passion. The beat of their Southern hearts is so strong, it will shake your speakers; and simultaneously throw your head into a nod. With “Wood Grain Grippin’”, Undeniably Genuine is returning interests to the classic, Southern Hip-Hop paradigm: Passion and Pain with a deep Trill swang. If the abbreviation UNG is any homage to UGK, it is well earned. They are, without doubt, making their OGs proud.

“Is it only when you know the pot is empty, that it’s gnawing at the corners of your mind?” croons a high-pitched, soulful sample in the beginning of Slick Mick’s lovely October release, “I Gotta Rose For These Hoes”. Once the steady shiver of a tambourine, engulfed by slick, bluesy guitars, has had its fill; a goliath, East Coast drum loop stomps into the mix, completing his puristic instrumental. As gravitating as this beat is, it gives our Sydney spitter room to further captivate us with his calm delivery and lyrical narration. This record, above all else, is aimed at the casual listener; who will press play whenever they yearn for a tranquil hip-hop song to pacify them. Slick Mick, sliding through bars regaarding his current state of life and attitude, is not seeking to overwhelm you. No, instead he maneuvers his smooth, Australian accent and endless river of rhymes, to deliver the ideal Saturday night ballad. On the brink of kicking back on the couch to relax? Throw on “I Gotta Rose For These Hoes” and let this excellent offering from Slick Mick massage those corners of your mind.

I started dancing when i was 3 years old which lead me to enter a dance competition with kids that was 16 when i was 6. I always loved dancing but i fell in love with singing when i was 14. I did not know i could actually sing until people around me were insisting how much i should that this seriously. While attending St.Edmund Campion Secondary School at 16 I joined a club named “midi club” we did a miniature music video and preformed for the Dufferin-Peel faculty.
